My students come from a wide variety of cultural, ethnic and socio-exonomic backgrounds. It is these differences that drive so many of our classroom activities and discussions. From the first day of school, I refer to my students as "historians" because that's who they are; they strive to think critically about everything they encounter and work to develop the necessary skills to communicate their findings with the world. I am confident that they are developing the skills that will allow them to be successful in every aspect of their future lives.
My Project
One of the major ways that my students plan to utilize these materials is by forming a cluster wide news station that will write, research and produce a monthly news episode. This will be one hundred percent, student organized and produced, and students will have an estimated two hours per week to work on the project. We want to promote independence and pride in products for our students, while allowing them the opportunity to showcase their hard work in their core subject areas and to strengthen their twenty-first century communication and collaboration skills. What we need are two camcorders with tripods and microphones (one for our class news anchor station and one for on-location interviews and school wide reports). We also are requesting a green screen so that we can create and utilize graphics to go along with out newscast. WeTopic segments for the news broadcast will include: Core Subject Areas (Science, Math, ELA, History, and STEM), as well as Pop Culture, School News, Community News, National and Global News.
