Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Like all 6 year olds, my 1st grade students are very curious and incredibly eager to learn! I teach at a Title I school located downtown Austin, Texas and most of my students are from a socioeconomic disadvantaged background. At home, these children may not have access to books, technology, materials or other resources. However, in the classroom they love learning through play in literacy and math stations with peers. Together, we make a wonderful class that works our hardest to fill each day with learning and fun! Our goal is to work together to build a lasting sense of community and empowerment in each other.
My Project
Getting ready to hit the ground running in inspiring the next generation of engineers, architects, computer scientists and more! My students are a group of energetic and rambunctious 6-7 year olds whose only wish is to create, destroy, create again and learn the entire time doing it. This is why I have asked for a classroom set of STEM story books to channel and encourage their creativity and ingenuity.
Using their new set of Magnatiles, along with manipulatives we already have in class, the students will be able to collaborate to solve the problems in the story books.
They won't even realize that we are also working on other important geometric concepts that they will learn later in the year.
What better way to finish off than to use our class computers or iPads to explain and reflect on our creations. But as you know, 20 kids in a room can get very loud. They will need to use their class set of headphones to help them concentrate as they film their presentation. Their headphones will also help them listen closely when I assign them other STEM challenges via their self paced assignments on the computer.
What a great year to be in 1st grade! What do you say, will you help this become a reality?
