STEM 3-D Printing

My students need core-curriculum centered on the STEM subject areas. Utilizing team-work and problem-solving, the students will propose, develop and perfect possible solutions, culminating in the production of their solution.

My Students

CCCK-8 has 32 students in grades 3 and 4. I will incorporate the 3D printer into core curriculum centered on the STEM subject areas. Utilizing team-work and problem-solving, the students will propose, develop and perfect possible solutions, culminating in the production of their resolution. As a basis for solving problems with design, they will be introduced to applicable design software and driven to develop the skills necessary to succeed as a 21st century learner. Students will learn to adapt to the specific challenges of new technology by recognizing abilities and limitations associated with filament type, optimal temperature ranges and mathematical scaling to properly fit designs to the print area.

I see 3D printing as a multi-faceted opportunity to raise my students’ awareness about new technology, engineering, and mathematics, while stimulating their curiosity and creativity.

Our school is in a beautiful but isolated canyon area with only 141 students total, so I try to expose my students to a broad range of activities that they might not be exposed to. My hope is that some of my students will be motivated to learn more about this exciting technology and pursue STEM-related careers or interests.

My Project

I will purchase a LulzBot Mini desktop 3D printer and filament to produce small prototypes of objects designed by my students at Coal Creek Canyon K-8. This printer is manufactured in Loveland, CO, by Aleph Objects., Inc. Several other Jefferson County Schools are currently using this brand of 3D printer. These schools are extremely satisfied with the customer service and quality of hardware and software provided by this local Colorado company. The purchase of this printer will allow 3rd and 4th grade students the opportunity to expand their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fundamentals by designing and printing real world potential solutions.
