STEAMing to the Stars: Robotics and Space Exploration
Help me give my students the opportunity to work with this unique robotics system and utilize it to solve NASA-developed problems by exploring robotics, programming and the concepts of designing for purpose within constraints.
Our students come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, cultures, neighborhoods and financial situations. Our STEAM program is one of a kind, co-taught in a maker-space, tech learning lab, art studio combo!
Our students collaborate in teams, and engage in real-world problem solving through the use of Technology, the Arts, Mathematics, Science, Engineering, and Design.
Our program is new, in that we a re the first middle school in Washoe County to officially move STEM to STEAM by co-teaching with two teachers from the differeing content areas, Art and Math/Science.
My Project
By using Lego EV3 robotics and exploring the "World Ender" asteroid collision Problem, students have the opportunity not only to delve into Science and Engineering content, but also to develop their 21 century learning skills through team-based collaboration. "Co-developed with space experts, the Space Challenge Set for LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 provides rich opportunities for students to explore and create innovative solutions for current space exploration topics. The set conforms to national curriculum standards and the accompanying digital content provides student-ready materials, teacher notes, and building instructions."-Lego Website
Students get to simulate, and engage in diverse experiences and recognize not only the global impact of one person, but also the power of good teamwork, good science, and good design, all while using technology developed for that exact purpose.
Through the fostering of diverse creative thinking through the design cycle and collaborative process, students will develop skills and knowledge about opportunities in the design and science/engineering fields, that they would otherwise not have access to.
