My Students

I have the most enthusiastic, eager to learn, amazing group of sixth grade students. All fifty-eight of my students are excited about learning and curious about the world around us! Our middle school is blessed with a culturally rich student population. I learn from the students each and every day and am thankful I was selected to be their teacher.

My sixth grade students are innovators, risk-takers, and active problem solvers who excel when given project-based learning opportunities that tap into their creativity, generosity, and understanding of others.

I know that many have faced difficult challenges in life, but they strive each day to overcome anything in their path. We are a school that is rich in culture and diversity.

I am constantly impressed at how the families, students, and school staff work as a team whenever someone is in need. Our students constantly amaze me, and I look forward to each smile, each act of happiness and their desire to learn more!

My Project

How do you create and authentic understanding of fractions, decimals, and percentages? Can you really understand these concepts through a combination of math and science? Of course!! STEAM allows the students to access the material and demonstrate their individuality and creativity. When students are challenged to create a paper circuit with copper tape, a battery, and an LED diode they are excited to show how they understand the science concept of circuits. Add on top of that parameters that incorporate math concepts- such as 80% of your circuit must be linear, 10% must have a diagonal line, and so forth we have a true STEAM activity.

The math and science concepts may be complex, but my 6th graders can understand them through the STEAM activities that tap into their imaginations and unique ideas.

The fraction/decimals/percentages towers will help us build our prior conceptual understanding of the math concepts. It also gives the students a hands-on measuring tool for their copper tape. That will help individualize this activity with students needing more support but also desiring a high level of independence.

6th graders soar in Science and Math when they have time to explore topics in depth and use their STEAM skills to create a project.
