STEAMing Our Way to Success With a Whiteboard Table!
Help me give my students a whiteboard table, dry erase markers, and towelettes to enhance their small group instruction and increase student engagement.
My students are a diverse group, with a wide range of academic ability. All of them, at one time or another, need some additional instruction, either individually, or in a small group.
Many of my students are visual learners, who can benefit from small group instruction, where I can provide extra diagrams, sketches, or mind maps.
They have a variety of learning styles and needs, but they do have one thing in common, they love to learn, to explore, and together, we are helping them develop a growth mindset.
My Project
Children who need to work in small groups with their teacher frequently are often those who are reluctant to share their ideas and their thinking. This activity table with a markerboard top is ideal for my visual and kinesthetic learners. The two that we have immediately changed the way my way students make their learning visible. One more table would benefit them because we have to draw names and rotate groups to give everybody an opportunity to use them.
Using these tables will help my students with expressing their thoughts, whether they create a mind map, a diagram, or sketch notes.
I've observed even my most hesitant learners don't have that same issue when you hand them a dry erase marker. We'll need lots of markers as well as board wipes to keep our new marker board table tops in working order.
In science, where data collection is essential, these tables can also be used for making observations during a lab, drawing diagrams, or doing simple calculations. When doing STEAM activities, we can easily shift them to STEM activities, since research shows that art is a way of offering more diverse learning opportunities and greater access to STEM for all types of learners. The possibilities are endless!
