We are an ESL magnet school with a population of about 400 students that speak over 23 different languages. Our students learn through the arts (vocal, fine, performing, band and strings). They have multiple opportunities to demonstrate what they learn through the arts and also opportunities to learn via the arts.
Learning through the arts requires deeper thinking, and fully immersing oneself in the arts.
Our students create galleries where their performances are meant to demonstrate their learning in different subjects.
My Project
With the XYZ da Vinci Pro, we plan to extend our ability to have our students design and build mathematically inspired sculptures for our school (Sierpinski Pyramids); to demonstrate concepts such as wing design and construction in the study of flight and Newton's Laws of Motion by designing and launching our own rockets, to deepen their understanding of how two dimensional shapes get translated into three dimensional shapes; and most of all, to learn first hand the 21st Century Skills of collaboration, creativity, and communication. We also envision our students being able to design and create school-specific products such as awards and medals for various events and plaques for our various exhibits n the student garden.
Our goal is to create more opportunities for our students to develop confidence, creativity, and interest in science, technology, engineering, math, art, and learning as a whole through making.
