Mrs. Veldkamp from Kentwood MI is requesting Educational Kits & Games through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers. Our Way through Kindergarten!

My students need hands-on materials - K'Nex building set, magnetic blocks, mosaic puzzle and building set - to engage with each other in S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics)-oriented activities.

My Students

Our students come everyday excited to learn and explore their world around them! Our classrooms are a fun, exciting and caring environment. Throughout the year, we become a big, happy family. We always work hard and play hard!

We teach at a Title I school in Michigan where 80 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.

We have a high number of students learning the English language, and they represent over 50 different countries. Some of our students receive backpack food on the weekend.

Despite so many hardships, our students are eager to learn and do their best. They come to school everyday because they want to learn all they can to be successful in all they do. Please support us in our next endeavor and watch us continue to soar!

My Project

A huge shift is beginning in our schools to create thinkers and problem solvers versus rote learners. One of the ways that we are attempting to do that is through implementing S.T.E.A.M. activities in our classrooms. S.T.E.A.M. teaches kids to problem solve through interactive and hands-on learning.

Our kids do not have opportunities out of the classroom to work collaboratively to solve problems, and having these materials would give them those opportunities on a daily basis.

The benefits of teaching them these kinds of skills (teamwork, communication, problem solving, engineering, trial and error, etc) are immense, and these products would give us the means to accomplish this.

We are requesting building supplies like the K’Nex building engineering kit, magnetic tiles, brain flakes and Picasso tiles that will allow us to create a S.T.E.A.M. center in our classroom where we would provide our students with tasks to complete, questions to answer, and problems to solve. Having all of the different types of building materials would allow for creativity and variety in the process! These materials would create an ongoing, interactive, challenging center to practice their problem solving and teamwork skills.
