My students need the microscope and slides so that they can experience science and get a better understanding of cells and how scientist use these tools in real life.
We are considered a STEAM school (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math). I want to give my students the opportunity to experience science every day. I try to incorporate science and and engineering activities weekly...I just need some tools to make this possible!
My students have a love of learning and science is one of their favorite subjects!
They love to learn by experiencing and only reading about science in a science text book is boring! They want to experience science through hands-on experiments, through small group collaborations, and by observing what is happening before them. I love to watch their faces and listen to their conversations as they learn about our grade level expectations as well as what personally interests them!
My Project
My third grade students would be so excited to see prepared slides of things that are familiar to them such as the sheded skin of our class pet, a Bearded Dragon. They can use the science equipment individually, or in pairs as they explore slides in a microscope. They can then use their observation and draw what they see and go through the scientific method of questioning and understanding the world around them.
I do not have the resources to fund this project, and our school does not have the resources to fund such items.
However, I think it is important for students to experience science on a regular basis. I hope that this will spark an interest in science and that the girls will want to continue to learn about science in a field that is dominated by men.
