Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is a happy and busy group of kindergarteners. Though they are only between the ages of five and six, these students have high aspirations for their futures. They are motivated, completely capable, and love learning.
They like to move, read, play and love lots of positive attention.
From the moment they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hoping to inspire even our earliest learners to continue to question the world around them and become empowered in their own voice to make a difference in the community.
My Project
Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, & Math (STEAM) is leading the way in education and the world today. Without STEAM, we would not have solutions to everyday problems or the ability to create and browse projects like this one on our laptops or phones.
Not only can STEAM save the world, it can save our kids too by making their future bright.
STEM jobs are expected to grow by 16% in the US between 2014 and 2024 compared to only 11% for other sectors. And right now, science and engineering careers earn more than double the income of the median job in the United States! However, it is often a sector that is inequitable in terms of representation and STEAM graduates are dropping out of their fields.
We can fix this by starting young! The idea is to integrate STEAM into core subject areas by including open-ended activities and experiments to increase visual and critical thinking in my students. Magnatiles can be used in science to play and experiment with light, magnets, etc. in an engaging way. The magnetic tangrams will be used along with our Osmo technology to create an interesting center. Materials like LEGO bricks and Budding Builders tub will be used to engage students in engineering practices to solve problems and build. The Crayola markers and crayons will be used daily for illustrating, drawing, and creating Young mathematicians will be able to learn math concepts in independent and small group centers through hands-on practices with the snap cubes, addition machine, and base ten blocks. The magnetic materials will also be used by me in whole group mini-lessons. My students already have the questions, curiosity, and ability to become our future innovators. All they need now is the opportunity and access.
