I teach kindergarten in a Title I Northern California elementary school where about 50% of our student population qualifies to receive free or reduced-price lunch and breakfast. I have several second language learners, identified special needs children, some students who have gone to TK or preschool, and some who are starting their first year in formal education.
My students are inquisitive and learning how to have a growth mindset as they begin to read, explore numbers, and problem-solve in both math and science in small, collaborative, differentiated groupings with an emphasis on personalized learning as part of our daily workshops.
My students are eager to learn and want to jump into reading, math and science every chance they can!
My Project
Our classroom is full of energetic and creative 5 and 6 year olds. The items we are asking for are additions for our weekly STEAM hours. Some of the items-transparent chips, connectors, pipe cleaners, pompoms, spinners and waxed paper-are either consumable items that need to be replenished or replacements for damaged or lost supplies. The other items-the castle blocks, tongs and the game of Qwitch- are items we would like to add to our STEAM hour supplies.
Each STEAM hour has a variety of choices that may include building challenges, art projects or games and activities to reinforce math, engineering, coding and teamwork skills.
I try not to limit the supplies my students can use but do try to reinforce being resourceful and courteous to other students' so they too can have the supplies they need to complete projects.
We are also asking for a book. When we are having class discussions about our feelings, getting along with friends and during our Choose Love lessons, there are many times that I ask students to listen to their friends and try to understand how they may see things differently than them. I think this book "Look What I See" may be a nice addition to these conversations.
Thank you so much for reading our proposal and hopefully, helping my students have a variety of supplies to support their learning during our STEAM hours.
