Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are bright, funny, talented, smart, determined, and inquisitive. All are all special education students with various learning disabilities. These students struggle more than the average student in order to access the curriculum. Most of my students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Most students are second-language learners and many have difficulty expressing themselves verbally using grammatically correct language. These students need opportunities to showcase their abilities and their strengths.
Our school is a Title I school located in the central valley.
Many of my students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Many of our families are seasonal agricultural workers and they often have difficulty finding employment and opportunity. Families struggle to provide the basics and there are not a lot of extracurricular activities available.
Each child in my classroom absolutely loves learning, although the method and environment in which they learn best vary greatly. I incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and alternative seating and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met! Students feel comfortable in my classroom, and they view my classroom as a safe space. These students are awesome, and I am lucky to support them and their families.
My Project
STEAM education encompasses the processes of critical thinking, analysis, and collaboration in which students integrate the processes and concepts in real-world contexts of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. WEDO 2.0 would make it possible to offer projects geared toward students in grades 3 through 5. The project would allow students to create team-based robotic projects and would include their parents as members of the team. These kits would allow me to offer projects to older students and apply these projects to what they are learning in their science class.
The curriculum requested in the project would allow me to challenge students in new and creative ways.
Students will experience hands-on, real-world application of concepts and theories in ways they have never had before. Students will use markets and paper to render a picture of their proposed project and will photograph their final project. Students will be able to "see" and "feel" what they are learning. What better way for students to really grasp what they are learning?
