My students are not your typical art students. If you look into our classroom, you will not see students quietly drawing or painting at a table. My students are inventors, scientists, engineers, and artists! Our classroom is STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) based! They create paintings of robots, draw new inventions, and code with LEGOs! My students are going to be the movers and shakers of tomorrow!
My students come from all walks of life.
Some have traditional families with good jobs, others struggle to make ends meet daily, and everything inbetween. The great thing about our kids is that no matter what life is like outside of school, they come ready to learn and excited to create! Our school is located in a rural community. Our community is very focused on the arts, which gives our kids wonderful opportunities to create in and out of class! We try to create awesome artwork that connects our creations to our community.
My Project
This year starts a new journey for our school. We are now a Project Lead The Way school! Our students will benefit from lessons in science, engineering, robotics, and medicine, to name a few. Our Art Room is Robotics Headquarters! Our Art Room now houses 16 VEX IQ robotics kits!
When you enter the Art Room you now see kids creating with robot brains, motors, sensors, remotes, and fields with real world challenges.
This first half of the year has been full of new learning, excitement, and student confidence is soaring! My students are excited to learn more about building, problem solving, and coding! The one problem we have had is lack of organization and storage. It is hard for students to keep their pieces in the small spots in their plastic containers. Finding the correct pieces in a timely manner keeps our lesson moving forward and allows students to focus more on building instead of getting frustrated not finding a piece.
The storage cart I have chosen is the same one we use for our competition robotics team. I know it works well for parts and gives us the compartments we need. I also have pre-made labels for each piece to provide the names of the pieces and a photo. This allows even our smallest learners to visualize parts at a young age! This cart would completely change the structure and time frame of our building and coding for the better!
