STEAM-powered Color Mixing Medallions for Service-Learning
Help me give my students the experience of using alternative methods of color mixing through alcohol inks and markers to create wearable works and learn the science behind how these methods work while also helping our community.
My students are creative middle schoolers who are interested in exploring the world of art. Students manipulate a variety of media in our classroom as they find a variety of solutions to challenges they approach with visual answers.
Our school is a great place for learning, and I am proud of the accomplishments of our students, which include recognition at local, state, and national competitions.
In addition to achieving this success, my students are interested in giving back to the community through a variety of service-learning projects.
My Project
This project is focused on students demonstrating their understanding of color theory as they help others create work during an event that benefits our community. Every year, we have an Empty Bowls event at our school to raise food and funds for those who are food insecure. We partner with our local food bank and parent group to organize a Fine Arts night that showcases the talents of our students, while inviting those within our community to participate in acts of art that impact others in a positive way.
This year, we would like to include the creation of these medallions during our Empty Bowls event to raise additional funds to help our local food bank while also allowing students to teach others about color mixing using alcohol inks.
Because these inks are permanent and fast-drying, the effects of the work will be abstract representations of color, shape, and form as they flow onto the surfaces of the medallions. We will use the spray bottles and mod podge to seal in the work that can be worn or ornamental decoration.
Seeing students use Art in Action to promote positive impact in the community is powerful. To be able to use STEAM concepts about media and theory helps make the learning more meaningful and stick beyond the moment. I am excited to enact this project with students and for your help in making it happen!
