First grade is a place full of energy and excitement for learning! I have a class full of energetic kids who are always ready to explore a new topic and learn. They have an affinity for building, creating, and exploring.
My class consists of 22 caring and creative students.
Of those 22, two receive resource services and 4 are in speech. 15 of my 22 students have parents in the military and many of their parents go on short and long term deployments. We are lucky to have such a kind and caring class that support each other through those changes. They work together to maintain a positive classroom community and an enthusiastic approach to learning.
My Project
During every indoor recess, all 22 of my students can be found gathered around two boxes of blocks building new creations. There are other games and supplies available but their interest is focused on different types of building materials. Picasso Tiles and Brain Flakes would give my students more building options and would open up a world of new possibilities for them to create and build.
Brain Flakes, Picasso Tiles, and popsicle sticks will be used to link my students' interest of building with the academic skills of solving math problems and building words.
These materials will provide learning opportunities while allowing students to explore their creativity.
Right now the building materials are stored in a teacher cabinet due to limited shelf space. The storage organizer will allow new and old STEAM building materials to be more accessible to students during all times of the day.
