Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is made up of 25 third graders. They are a hardworking group of amazing young ladies and gentlemen, sponges, eagerly soaking up all they can share during our school day.
Our school is a Title I school in Southern California.
82% of students are receiving free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch, and many are English Language Learners. Our campus is ethnically diverse, and students are working hard to overcome poverty and become fluent in the English language. They are amazingly resilient tiny people who want to be successful in life.
My Project
My students will eventually enter the workforce and have jobs that do not even exist yet. My students need to opportunity to develop their 21st century learning skills including communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) activities allow my students to develop these skills which cannot be mastered with paper and pencil activities.
My students need the opportunity to think outside the box!
Some of the STEAM challenges include: building LEGO mazes for a marble to travel through to reach a goal point, constructing the tallest craft stick towers, and engineering structures out of chenille stems and Play Dough that are able to hold the greatest amount of weight (enter Barrel of Monkeys to hang on the structures).
These activities will teach my students so much about the 4C's while being engaging and fun!
