I teach 1st - 3rd grade students in Port Angeles, Washington. Port Angeles is a small town on the Olympic Peninsula. The students I teach have chosen to attend school in an Alternative Learning Environment due to the Covid -19 pandemic. I have students in all different economic, social, cultural, health and academic situations. My main goal this year is to support families through this unprecedented time. I provide one on one, in person teaching opportunities as well as phone calls, google meets and small group opportunities. I am providing materials and support for those that are struggling learners as well as those identifies as gifted. Many of my students in the regular brick and mortar setting struggled with issues revolving around ADHD and are finding this environment helps with anxiety driven behaviors. My small group, in person learning, has been focused around art and stem. This provides time for the students to interact at a safe distance and use their mind problem solving and creatively. The conversations are filled with excitement, support and genuine collaboration as they create and share ideas.
My Project
These LEGO Education kits will help develop my students' curiosity and confidence to solve real-life problems through engaging STEAM projects.
They are easily adaptable to fit any learning environment we have.
During this pandemic it is important to reach students and their families where they are comfortable. I will be able to send home the kit for the student do use at home with their parent, I can zoom with them as well. The other option will be to do small group in person enrichment groups with those.
Working with science, engineering, art and technology is an authentic way to develop critical thinkers.
