Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My kindergarten students are so excited to learn and especially more eager to apply their learning through hands-on activities. A large percentage of my classroom students are eligible for free or reduced lunch. Since kindergarten is sometimes most of my students' first experience in school, I want to make sure that we set a solid foundation for their learning through lots of project-based lessons. Students in my class are of diverse backgrounds and speak a different language at home. Their English language levels range from beginning to advanced. So giving them hands-on projects will be more meaningful for their learning than what they can learn strictly from books.
My Project
A lot of my students learn best through hands-on projects because sometimes certain subjects are difficult to grasp using just pencil and paper. With this project, my students have the opportunity to design their work, test it out using different materials, and really get to test out their work using the laser machine.
In order for our students to go the direction we want, we must give them the most meaningful and relatable opportunities to do so.
We must give them the opportunity to design, explore, and test out their projects. STEM projects are not limited to just the older grades. It can start with kindergarten too because kindergarteners can design and do laser cutting too!! It is amazing to see what students can do when we give them the opportunity to showcase their learning. I definitely know my students will love this! Our classroom can continue to be student-driven and hands-on, and I, as their teacher, will serve solely as their facilitator.
