Our school is a neighborhood school that is home to almost 800 students. Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with a large number of our students receiving free lunch. Our school is also one of the most ethnically diverse schools in our city. Students speak a multitude of languages including English, Spanish, Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Arabic.
As diverse as our students are economically and culturally, they are diverse in their academics.
Our school is home to the CETA program in our district. We have a partnership with The Kennedy Center. Our students enjoy integrating arts into their daily curriculum. Our school is undergoing a much-needed renovation to accommodate our students and our programs. We are also home to a STEAM program where our students conduct research alongside of classroom teachers and specialists. Our staff works closely with Teacher's College where we are trained in Reading and Writing Workshop.
My Project
The students in my classroom this year are very curious and love challenges. These STEM kits will meet these needs. An example of one of the kits that I can explain is the Magna-Tiles. Another example is a Big Bolt master construction kit. There are a total of 7 kits that focus on planning and building. I have asked for open storage boxes to help organize the materials and allow the students to see the STEAM job that they would like to choose. These extra jobs will enable the students to each make a personal choice during our STEAM job block of time.
This project will cover a multitude of the kindergarten standards.
These kits will enable us to teach several subject areas with the same materials. I appreciate the fact that the kits are set up with learning styles as well as developmental levels as a focus. The kits are child-friendly and the materials are very durable. Therefore the kits can be used this year and for many years to come.
