I teach kindergarten in a Title I, Northern California elementary school where about 50% of our student population qualify to receive free or reduced-price lunch and breakfast. I have several second language learners, two identified special needs children, some students who had gone to TK or Preschool, and some who are starting their first year in formal education.
My students are learning how to have a growth mindset as they begin to read, explore numbers, and problem solve in both math and science in small collaborative, differentiated groupings with an emphasis on personalized learning as part of our daily workshops.
My Project
My students and I are asking for 2 sets of Legos for our STEAM challenges and task cards and for our morning tubs. Each student in my class loves when we bring out our Legos. The problem is we only have 1 box of Legos for all the class to share. Even with partners, we do not have enough Legos to meet the challenges.
We have a STEAM/STEM block twice a week, a math workshop once or twice a week and morning tubs twice a week and Legos are the preferred manipulative for small group and partner work.
My students love to work all around the room with manipulatives. they love when I put out supplies with task cards for them to
complete with their partners. They love to work on skills that challenge them to think outside the box and explain their thinking to their partner. Sometimes I have children that just need a break and I would love to give them some time to just play with a small box of Legos to help relieve their anxiety/frustrations as they take a breather from our academic day. We would love to receive these Legos sets so we can work on math, engineering, art, science and just use our creative juices to have fun and/or reorganize our thoughts and feeling and take a moment to unwind.
Thank you for reading our proposal and hopefully, supporting my wonderful and engaged Kindergarten students.
