STEAM for Kindergarten: Creative Problem Solving for Young Learners
Help me give my students Design & Build Engineering Centers, Fairy Tale Problem Solving STEM kits, Magnetic Tile Building Block sets, and other exciting STEAM activities to engage in creative problem solving and team building in our classroom!
I am fortunate to spend my days with an energetic group of 18 curious Kindergarten learners! These special students are extremely excited to come to school each day. They love exploring new concepts, making learning connections, problem-solving, sharing ideas, and becoming more independent throughout the year.
I am always looking for creative and fun ways to engage these young learners.
They love to think independently and work together to solve problems and create new ideas! They are constantly growing in confidence and have big dreams for the future! Our school day is busy and active, their enthusiasm is inspiring, and I love being a small part of their ongoing learning adventure!
My Project
This project will enable my students to use cooperative, hands-on learning and problem-solving skills, as they engage in STEAM activities. These age-appropriate Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math activities provide students the opportunity to think creatively and critically to solve problems and create new ideas. My students will collaborate in small groups to share their ideas and learn valuable teamwork skills.
Hands-on learning keeps students engaged and excited about new learning!
Through the use of literature, "What Do You Do With an Idea?", "The Most Magnificent Thing", and "Rosie Revere: Engineer", students will be introduced to the wonders of boldly creating new ideas and solving challenges. The Design & Build Engineering Centers provide challenges for students as they seek to create houses, vehicles, and bridges, using task cards. The Fairy Tale Problem Solving Kits provide opportunities for students to use materials to solve problems from familiar stories, such as The Three Little Pigs, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and The Three Billy Goats Gruff. Other materials, such as Omni Building Planks, wooden cubes, Brain Flakes, and Cossy Magnet Tiles Building Blocks allow for more free exploration of building ideas, as well as through specific challenges and team-building activities. The Q-BA Maze 2.0 kit provides opportunities for building amazing marble run designs that allow for learning concepts in physics and art.
I am confident my students will enjoy and benefit from these opportunities for solving problems creatively and collaboratively with other students to develop a team-centered classroom where all students are engaged, growing, and developing a lifelong love of learning!
