Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This class makes every morning that I wake up, a day I look forward to being at work. I have a class of 9-12 year old fourth graders in a low-income area of New York. (Every student qualifies for free or reduced fare lunches) This is my second year with this group of students. I have a large mix of students whose levels range from kindergarten to seventh grade. Many students are second language learners from countries such as the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan. Because of this many of my students do not receive the support they need at home.
Additionally, more than 1/3 of our general education class has an IEP and receives special education services.
The various disabilities range from reading processing issues, to delays in speech, to autism. This class can be challenging at times, but the students are kind and supportive of one another like a family.
My Project
The fourth graders in New York State take a science test every year. To help increase proficiency in science, we try to make as many activities as possible hands on. With these circuit projects, we can enable the students to learn by doing, rather than just reading about how circuits work. Thus creating a deeper level of understanding.
By doing, instead of just being lectured to, our students will be more engaged and will be inspired to open up their STEAM thinking.
I am hoping that my students will be so encouraged by these hands on activities, that it will stay with them throughout their lives.
