Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a growing charter school with about 70% of the student body receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and multiple labels ODD, ADHD, ADD, OHI, ELL, and more. Their diversity isn't limited to just their backgrounds, but to the ways they learn best as well.
We are a fully inclusive elementary school that serves just over 500 students.
My students come to school eager to learn, whether or not they have support at home. They work hard to try to meet the high expectations of the teachers at the school. They thrive on new academic experiences and show the most growth with hands-on, real world activities.
My Project
The supplies in this project will give my diverse classroom opportunities to complete STEAM projects the entire year! Students who find it difficult to focus on tasks while sitting still (ADHD) will be much more engaged in learning about science, math, engineering, technology and art if they get to DO rather that read/see/listen to it. Our class will learn about plants using test tubes and rubbing alcohol to observe leaf colors and chlorophyll and crayons and tracing paper to see the veins in the leaves. They will use vinegar and baking soda to create volcanic eruptions and to observe how their chemical reaction can inflate balloons. They will use the planters to grow a variety of plants and vegetables for which they will make observations, predictions, and measure changes. They will use borax, glue, and sand to make and explore the properties of ghost mud; weigh and organize items by size; create different varieties and consistencies of slime; make predictions about chemical reactions; create diagrams of their collected data and so much more - all while recording their learning (successes and failures) on the easel in their science center!
This year it's full STEAM ahead in my class full of eager, creative, inventive 3rd graders!
Our class will become scientists, engineers, artists, and mathematicians while completing the multiple STEAM activities this project will fund!
