Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a school counselor to over 500 elementary students in the far East Bay Area. Our school community strives to prepare every student for success in college, career, and life. We value and we support the personal and intellectual success of each student. Our students come from varied and diverse backgrounds, and face many challenges. Our school community has a high truancy rate at 22.8%. In addition, over 74% of our student population are socioeconomically disadvantaged and over 20% of students are English learners.
Everyday I am inspired by the enthusiasm and resilience that my young students demonstrate.
I work with students on their personal, social/emotional, behavioral, and academic development. I do my best to provide a safe and welcoming school environment to my students through school-wide initiatives, classroom curriculum & small group/individual programming.
My Project
As a school counselor, I will be better able to support STEAM career development for all students, especially those from historically underrepresented groups with STEAM career development resources (such as books, posters, etc). Currently, there is a lack of gender and ethnic diversity of students entering STEAM educational programs and career fields. At the elementary level, is a perfect time to introduce knowledge of these career fields to our diverse student population.
At Jack London Elementary, we want to educate and inspire our scholars about their interest and advancement in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics.
Beyond just learning about the STEAM field, we hope to promote engagement in problem solving, technology exploration, and 21st century skill building.
