My students are simply incredible! I am in my fourth year teaching, and these kids have such a wonder and yearning to learn. They ask so many questions and constantly want to learn more. These students make me want to do all I can to make them continue to love coming to school every day.
When the bell rings at the end of the day, my students tell me they'd rather stay at school!
We have participated in many science experiments and virtual field trips and they love taking notes to ask questions for later. 63% of our students are on free or reduced price lunch and sometimes don't have food at home for the weekends. I try to make their learning experience as enjoyable as mine was when I attended school.
My Project
My goal is to have a device in the hands of every one of my students. The future is here and we need to keep these students engaged. There are so many educational tools we can use to enrich their learning. With teaching the Cambridge Program, these are the students that strive for even higher, independent achievement. I encourage my students to show me what they know in whatever way they wish - not always the pen and paper tests. This would help give them the outlet to be creative and learn in different ways using their STEAM brains.
I want to encourage my students' creative side and get those shy students to open up.
For example, I started to use an app called FlipGrid last year and one student who never raised her hand or got upset when I called on her really took to it. I was amazed at what she had to say! The iPads are great for this tool because the students can take the iPads to a quiet part of the room or library and make their videos. I also purchased an app and green screen for students to make movies about our learning goals. What could be more fun than creating your own movie scene with T-Rex behind you?! I want to give open ended goals for students to research on their own to come and find the answers. Nothing is more gratifying to me than having students come up to me and say, "Ms. Owsiany! Look what I found! Did you know this?!" Also, it helps to differentiate with all subjects so the students can take their learning to a new level with my support.
