My students need art supplies that will assist me in "Empowering Students Through Art". First grade needs paper, finger paint, sand, brushes, paint and splash mats.
I teach eager first graders in a neighborhood K-8 Gold Ribbon School. Our school is the only K-8 school in the district. We received the distinguished award this year due to our excellent programs. Some students come from homes that may not have the means to buy resources to enhance their learning.
My students are inquiring, exciting, collaborating, growing, and wonderful little 6-year old learners.
Our motto is, "Practice Makes...Better!" We learn to love our erasers, appreciate confusion, and explore alternate points of view in first grade. This is a time when learning for pleasure is at it's height. We have an Exploration Station filled with teacher and student donated items. We discuss books, write opinions, dance and sing. Our school recently received the Gold Ribbon Schools Award, due to our excellence in programs and student achievements. Our campus is a community of interconnected people working together toward a common goal of excellence in education.
My Project
Science is a multi-sensory subject in first grade. The art supplies will truly meet the motto of, "Empowering Students Through Art." The paint, brushes, mold-and-play sand, and finger paint will truly bring learning about animals and habitats to life! Students will use the Create-a-Story paper center throughout the year, as they become increasingly more confident writers about non-fiction literature and science topics, such as their animal explorations. We have an "Exploration Station" in class, where students make, build, explore, engineer, and experiment in various ways. The addition of art supplies will enable students to communicate their findings in a fun, new way. The sand will enable them to create sculptures and models of various topics. For example, the mold-able sand will enable my young students to form various habitats, then use the Create-a-Story paper to explain the important components of it's habitat. They'll use paint to make dioramas showing the animal in it's habitat!
Learning in first grade is much different than most adults today remember.
We utilize all the senses to explore relevant topics. My students garden, cook, experiment, and solve problems throughout the day. This project will enable my students to make connections across the curriculum. From finger-painting a picture of the animal they have researched, to drawing pictures, to building a model of it's habitat, this project is sure to inspire my young scientists! Learning at its best!
