STEAM Activities to Learn about Electricity and Construction
Help me give my students the hands-on experience of learning how electricity works with snap circuits and how engineers construct with the magnet building tiles. These items will be shared with my school's STEAM team.
As a STEAM teacher in a low-income, high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. All of our students receive free breakfast and 90% receive free or reduced-price lunch. This program uses many hands-on appropriates to increase engagement and problem solving applications. I will be entering into 7 classrooms helping students focus on questioning the world around them. Three of these classrooms have a smaller setting to assist a special group of students who struggle behaviorally and need a little extra motivation.
How do you learn best? Listening to a lecture? Reading articles?Let's face it. Most people learn best with hands-on learning.
Hand-on resources fosters connections to real-world situations, and increases engagement.
Snap Circuits is a line of electronic kits that snap together to create a working motor, lamps and speakers to foster children's awareness of how electricity works. Magna-Tiles are 3D geometric magnetic building tiles that are connected with their magnetic force to help students build and create like engineers.
With these resources students will be conferring with peers to further develop problem-solving skills in the fields of electrical and engineering.
