If you could be in my class during 4th bell, you'd hear a horrible buzzing from the speaker system connected to my computer and my feet clopping across the room, for I never sit down. But then, you'll start to start to listen harder, and you'll hear the sounds of 29 kids working meticulously on their works of literary genius that many of their friends will have no idea what blood, sweat, and tears they put into it.
My creative writing classes are often made up of 29 kids that many have never had the opportunity to write what they really want to write because English classes are now full of test prep and essays about topics they are bored with.
The problem: the class is still pretty brand new and I have very literally nothing to teach with.
My Project
Creative Writing is one of the newer classes at the high school where I teach. After seeing that more and more students were seeking a place to tap into their creative sides more, I worked for two years to bring the class to my school. But without any resources provided to the me nor students, I have had to become creative myself in developing a class that allows the students to really see their potential come to life. Mostly though, I have just paid for items myself.
The book Steal Like an Artist is going to be a great resource for students of all ages to help them really realize that they can be creative geniuses!
Whether they are writing poems, children stories, or one-act plays, students need more than just instruction, they need to be inspired and Austin Kleon does just that!
These books will be used at the beginning of the course for not only formal instruction, but after each projects students will be challenged to follow the newly learned tenant and begin their journey to tapping into their own creativity.
