In our class, we are family. We started and will be ending the school year learning virtually. We are a part, but mostly together virtually throughout the day. I have 26 students this year that come from different walks of life. Being located just outside of Champaign, Illinois, students come from all over the world, yet some have never left our county.
My students learn best when they are able to be engaged.
The special thing about it is that in a few months, we have come together to mesh as one family. I teach students with different abilities and disabilities, with gifted talents. We are all included in our classroom, where we work together as a team, online. We are back and working hard despite the circumstances we are all facing in our world's pandemic.
My Project
This year is a year unlike any other. After 8 years of teaching students who I can physically high-five, hug, and comfort, I am tackling the world of virtual learning. Although I constantly miss those high fives and hugs, I am finding new ways to build relationships and family moments. This new way of learning has resulted in hours of recreating curriculum, building my technology specialist skillset, and inventing new strategies and routines to provide a valuable virtual experience for all of my kids. Through all this hard work, there have been 26 individuals matching my efforts - my kids. They are flourishing! They’re pushing themselves and truly showing their passion for learning and for school. However, with great ideas come an incredible need for reliable technology with faster processing speeds. Even the simplest tasks are not possible with our current technology. The processor cannot keep up with the sharing of screens, videos, or extensions. A MacBook's processor would allow me to reach, connect, and push my students towards the education they deserve.
