Ms. Jones from Philadelphia PA is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a scholastic news subscription to help them learn about interesting events, research, etc. that is happening in the world around us. My students are working on functional skills such as problem solving.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Welcome a classroom filled with readers, scientists, artists, historians, musicians, and loads more. All of these students have their strengths and their weakness, but we all work together to keep building on our weaknesses to make them our strengths.
Our motivational saying is I may not be able to do it now, but I am going to train my brain to do it.
Our classroom is filled with questions, and answers discovered through hands on activities and explorations. As Philadelphians my students do not always have the same access to resources to those students who live in more suburban areas but also have many opportunities that are not within reach to us because of lack of resources. I want my students to understand that the world is bigger than just their neighborhood. As they are all students with Autism, I strive to provide them with as many opportunities and resources to help them continue reach their fullest potential academically but also socially and emotionally.
Not only do we focus on academics but because they have diverse needs and challenges, we also put a large amount of focus on functional needs that translate into the community.
These material will help my students continue to learn through engaging and research based text. A subscription to Scholastic News will help them to learn how to read current events, learn about new finding around the world and give them some understanding of the world outside of their own city. Many of these students have never traveled outside of Philadelphia and have a hard time understanding that their is more to the state, country and globe then their immediate surroundings.
In our classroom, we focus on academics to help become as strong as they can, functional skills are also very important because some of the intellectual and social challenges the students face.
Functional skills are important to our curriculum as well to ensure their success within the community. Some of these skills include following directions, following a step by step guide (words or pictures), learning basic cooking skills, problem solving (starting with thinking about step by step thoughts), etc. Geo Sticks and sequencing activities will all help to build this basic skills to help student be successful in the community later on.
