Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a diverse and lively group of 5th graders. They each have a variety of different interests and life experiences. Many of my students aren't encouraged to read at home. I would classify a handful of my students as very reluctant readers.
Recently a large number of my students discovered a book series that sparked an interest in reading.
I have never been more proud as a teacher to see my students devouring book after book and series after series. They are begging for more books! As a reading teacher, this is music to my ears and I must oblige them!
My students need a variety of books to keep them engaged in their newfound hobby of reading.
My Project
In a perfect world, each one of my students would go home after school, open up a book and start reading- without anyone telling them to do so. Unfortunately, books have a lot to compete with these days to keep a kid's attention. Each week when we go to the library I try to introduce my students to new books or authors that might interest or excite them. But, each week they check out the same books by the same few authors, and if I'm lucky they will read them.
It is my goal to introduce my students to a wide range of different genres and authors, and open their eyes to the amazing books out there, waiting to be read.
This project is a continuation of our last project. I have chosen specific books the kids have requested or more of a series they have fallen in love with. I have never seen my students devour books so quickly or grow so much as readers. We will use all of these books from popular series, to help students continue to grow their love of reading.
