Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"A place for everything, and everything in it's place!"- Benjamin Franklin.
One challenge I've been overcoming this year is learning how to stay organized in such a fast paced and short class. I see 6 classes (k-2) between 9 am and 12 pm (3 hours) for 30 minutes each.
My students are mostly English speaking students learning Spanish for the very first time.
Several have families of Hispanic Heritage, but do not speak the language at home. For that reason, this is their first exposure to English. My school is a very positive place where students and teachers expect the best from one another.
My Project
Since my students are very young (k-2), they do not have lockers, and for the most part are just learning how to become organized and responsible students. I want to make my room feel more of a home for them (even though they're only here for 30 minutes). One way I can do this is by giving them more ownership of classroom materials. Not only will this give them ownership, but it will help them stay more organized! I am requesting pocket chairs so they can keep Spanish folders in their seats, and keep an individual art box in it as well. Currently, most art materials are communal, but I would like to instill more responsibility and ownership in what they use. This will, inevitably, help them stay organized.
This project will make a difference, because my students will each have their own individual chair, where they can store their Spanish folder.
Currently, they keep them in group bins, but I believe it would be better if their folders were directly behind them. I am planning on making art boxes for each student's chair, so that will also help in holding them responsible for their art materials (i.e crayons, glue, scissors, pencils, erasers, etc.)
