Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students all have big eyes that glisten in the light. They live in an extremely poor neighborhood and it does not faze them. My students cry when it is time for vacation. They stay behind when the day is over. I often find one or two hiding in the coat closet. They want to be in school. They are starving for more knowledge, more safety, and more consistency. They feel safe in our school. They feel safe with their teachers.
As their teacher, I am a conduit of knowledge, order, and respect.
I have a big responsibility to bring the world to them and hold their attention within our room.
My Project
My students need a scholastic magazine subscription in order to stay current in the news. My students come from a very low income neighborhood where it is not uncommon for them to live in homeless shelters. There are many scenarios where their backpack is all they have for personal space. The Scholastic magazine is compact but full of great quality. Donating to this project gives my students excellent reading materials, putting current events in their hands but not taking up too much space. These kids need to be on the pulse of what is going on. They also need to be exposed to multifaceted reading materials.
