My students need flexible seating options to help them focus on their work projects. Providing alternative seating helps them to continue working, while addressing their anxiety and sensory needs.
The 14 students in my classroom range in age from 15 to 21, and are part of a special education program to help them learn and develop transition skills to prepare them for the next stage of their life.
Our classroom is a self-contained program located within a public high school, which enables these students to be a part of the school experience, and interact with their peers throughout the school day.
While these students have a wide range of learning needs, they work and relate will with others, in a small area. During the school day, these students enjoy the opportunity to be high school students, even though they are working on an alternate learning track.
My Project
Providing these students with flexible seating options will help enhance their experience in the classroom. In a classroom of students with a wide range of special needs, it is very beneficial to help meet these students where they are with their needs, to help them stay on task with their learning objectives.
The bean bag chair will provide a sense of relaxation and calming for a student who feels an increase in anxiety and will help them continue with their study, as well as offering an opportunity of movement and change of location within the room.
The wobble chairs will help students who have increased engery levels, while also helping develop and increase core strength while they are seated at their desk.
Even though these will be used within the same room, providing the opportunity for movement to an alternate seating arrangement will still enhance their focus. As our class size has expanded, the physical room size has not, so providing another alternative becomes even more important to serve these students.
