My classroom is full of energetic, willing and kind students who struggle to learn the concepts in mathematics. Many factors like tardiness, chronic absence, and non-participation have become the reason for their struggles. Over time, they have lost their motivation to stay focused and confidence to know that they can "do it". Building up their confidence is hard at times because they have fallen so far behind in their grade level content. It's nice to see how station work and other classroom activities have helped motivate them to learn. My students are preparing for life after school, and are in need of 21-century skills for their future. Our high school lacks the use of technology. With a student population of about 1500, the school possesses only 4 computers on wheels (COWS) and two labs. The computers do not hold a charge for more than 20 minutes and they are constantly being used for testing; leaving very limited time for teachers to sign them out.
Classroom activities like stations, scavenger hunts and task cards have been the focus of our math classes for the past couple of years in the high school. It has been hard getting students engaged in some of these activities because they lack motivation and the ability to work together. In addition, the use of cell phones have been a major distraction. It is my hope that a set of Chromebooks will help give me the opportunity to personalize my instruction during station work and when I assign projects.
A Chromebook station can provide a vast array of individualized learning and allow me to create a teacher's station to provide small group instruction within my class, thus improving student engagement and participation in lessons and projects.
Chromebooks have and will help provide meaningful and individualized instruction.
On the occasions that I get to sign-out a computer lab, I see my students interest rise. I can see how they love the technology and want to work harder.
