Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my 4th grade Dual Language class all live in a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood within the diversity of New York City. Many come from low income families and have yet to have the opportunity to explore the neighborhood around them let alone anywhere outside their neighborhood. They come to school ready to learn and engage in meaningful experiences. It is part of our school's mission to prepare our students to be a part of society and to succeed in education.
My students are on the path to bilingualism which will help them succeed in so many ways from here on forward.
Within the class there is a large range of abilities, proficiencies, characteristics, and personalities. My students are special because they each bring new and different experiences to our class.
My Project
My students need access to various forms of print such as informative magazines. My Dual Language students will benefit from this because it is different and engaging. This is a great component to add to our Social Studies and Science learning.
Scholastic Magazine will give them access to Current Events, Social Studies, and Science topics in a fun magazine format!
Scholastic News will provide my students a look into the world around them. Magazines include photographs and charts, differentiated materials, graphic organizers, debates, videos, comprehension questions, and best of all, a Spanish translated magazine version for our Bilingual component!
The magazines can be used in so many different ways. Scholastic builds skill teaching into some of their articles that are accompanied by graphic organizers and videos. These magazines can also be used for center activities and small group work.
