My Students

Students deserve to learn about the world around them to become global citizens with materials that are motivating and easily understood. Scholastic News provides an age appropriate, child friendly "newspaper" for students to read and engage in meaningful discussions with their peers.

The demographic of my inner-city school includes students who are highly at-risk due to poverty, homelessness, transiency, and a large population of English Language Learners.

A large number of my students qualify for Free and Reduced Lunch. Despite these disadvantages, they have a hunger for knowledge and acceptance. My students are very loving, and appreciate any extra support they are given.

My Project

Scholastic News will expose my students to nonfiction text and the current events happening throughout the world. This will provide them with the opportunity to relate to the world and comprehend nonfictional text. They will also learn to be better readers as they read for information and for enjoyment.

Due to budget cuts in my state, our school was unable to purchase this valuable learning tool.

This has the potential to make a difference in students' lives due to personal interests and the ability of the articles to inspire them to set goals and make life decisions.
