Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in a suburban community and come from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. Our school's foundation is one built on and within the community as it is one of the oldest schools in the area.

They are challenged from the moment they walk into the building to be students who are always "leading, succeeding, and excelling together."

In order to keep them challenged, student engagement is of the utmost importance! My first graders come to me naturally engaged, but it is my job to continue the engagement and to take it to the next level and beyond. Doing so allows me to earn their trust, to build relationships, and to keep them coming back for more. I know that I am helping prepare and grow them to become respectful and responsible worldly leaders who will one day be able to give back to the community that has been built around their school.

My Project

My students will use the items from this project from the moment they walk into my classroom each morning to help them stay engaged while encouraging their natural, creative minds.

Say good-bye to worksheets!

These items will allow my students to move away from the mundane morning routine of worksheets and let them begin their day with something tangible, hands-on, and different each day. Student choice is something that is emphasized daily in my classroom and what better way to let the students choose than through the use of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) bins? Each month, twenty STEM bins will be put together with the different contents (erasers, counting objects, building blocks, Lincoln logs, etc.) to allow the students to tinker, play, and create. The STEM bins will rotate monthly and will allow my students to pick a new interactive station each morning, if they choose to. Some of the other items, such as the Story Cubes and the lacing letters will be able to be used for student choice within our reading rotations to help with phonemic awareness and spelling patterns.

I would like to integrate more flexible seating options for my students to pick from. The stability cushions are easy to use and are a very mobile seat choice that is great for table work or floor work. The stack stools and the lap desks will allow for my students to be able to transition into group work throughout the day with ease. First graders are full of energy and movement and the fidget bands for the bottom of the chairs will help the students stay in their seat and focused on their work when they come to the reading group table and sit in "traditional."
