I am a fifth grade teacher at Councill Elementary School, which is part of the Birmingham City School system in Alabama. Our school is considered to be an inner city school where the majority of the children receive free lunch. Although most of our children live in poverty we do not let this hold them back. Our fifth graders scored the highest score in the system on the Fifth Grade Alabama Writing Assessment. We are also the only school in the system to have been designated with the honor of being a Torchbearer School. Torchbearer schools are high-poverty schools that have overcome the odds to become a high-achieving school. They must meet the following criteria: 1. Seventy percent of the students receive free or reduced price meals. 2. Seventy percent of the students score at Levels 3 or 4 on the Alabama Reading and Math test. 3. The students score above average on the Stanford Achievement Test- 10th Edition. 4. Adequate Yearly Progress has been achieved for 2 consecutive years. As one might think, we are quite proud of the children here at Councill! In the fifth grade we pass classes. This upcoming school year, I will be teaching all of the fifth grade science and social studies classes. In my time teaching here at Councill, I have found that the children are quite unaware of current events. They do not watch the news or even get a newspaper at their house. While learning about past historical events is important, the children also need to be aware of what is going on in the world presently. I am asking for a year subscription to the Scholastic News (grades5/6) magazine for each fifth grader. We plan on having 80 fifth graders next year. I truly feel that our children will benefit greatly by simply being more aware of what is going on in our world today. Thank you.
