My students are part of a new class this year to help improve grades, morale, and sense of purpose in our school building. These students have failed two or more trimesters of Language Arts.
Middle school can be a difficult age in itself; it's even more difficult when you fail multiple trimesters of a class.
That's what my students are up against. These students are below grade level when it comes to reading. These students, when asked, "hate reading!"
These students don't really hate reading, they just haven't found something that they have connected with. That's the purpose of this project.
Like I said earlier, middle school can be a tough age. By teaching and reading the book, The Outsiders, my students can explore the concept of innocence and relate to how these characters go through tough times.
This novel has endured the test of time because the characters are so relatable.
It's about family, friendship, loss, hopes, and perseverance in the face of adversity. It is about not judging people based on socioeconomic limitations and stereotypes.
This book has always gotten through to reluctant readers. My students will be able to feel the fear and anger of the Ponyboy as they read.
