Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What if the only way to learn was through using pictures or objects? Some children on the autism spectrum think, learn, and organize information this way.
Most of my students are diagnosed with autism and are truly amazing children who have a range of abilities in their social, cognitive, and language skills.
I believe providing my students with a variety of materials and opportunities that support their various abilities and learning styles will enable them to generalize skills, engage socially and continue to blossom as learners.
My Project
Schools are no longer in session and the transition to online learning has been a tedious process, especially for students with special needs. Most of my students are visual and tactile learners who benefit from consistency. While some student are able to focus and complete work on a computer, others require concrete materials to assist with their learning, especially with daily living skills.
My students need hand soap and a variety of books that can be adapted to help them learn how to wash their hands at home during this trying time.
Washing hands is a critical skill, that many of our students still need assistance with. Families can access activities and resources online but those without printers cannot make hard copies that would further enhance their child's learning. Being able to bring my families a bottle of hand soap that their child is accustomed to using in addition to modified books will help make teaching their child to wash their hands at home a more fruitful experience.
