Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is a sanctuary for my students. It is a place for them to feel safe, overcome challenges, and build a growth mindset. My students are struggling with reading and the foundational skills needed to become successful readers and writers.
Many of our students have experienced hardship and need a place where they can feel like they can thrive and flourish.
We have a high population of EL learners, special education students, and foster kids. Our entire school receives 100% free breakfast and lunch. I want my classroom to be a place where they can feel like they are growing as readers and obtain the skills needed to be at grade level.
My Project
An uncomfortable student is a disengaged student. By giving my students a reading area filled with bean bags and soft seats, it will allow them to find a place where they can dig into their work without being regimented to a desk and seat. Research has shown that a student-centered classroom, a place where students are comfortable and have choices about their seating, increases motivation, productivity and creates higher order thinking skills.

My classroom services multiple grade levels for support in reading. They spend 60 to 75 minutes every day with me. Currently, my students are struggling readers that don't see reading as an enjoyable activity. Many of these students have trouble focusing and become a distraction in their homeroom class. My goal is to show them with effort, focus, and a little perseverance they can grow and become more successful readers. Giving them bean bags, soft seats, and a comfy seat will ultimately allow them to become more invested in their learning.
