As a culturally diverse lower socioeconomic students my school is comprised of children from many different backgrounds and cultures. Children at my school come from different parts of the state, city, and even other countries. Our classes serve students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities. Many of them have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty coping. The sand tray and art supplies will allow them to express their traumas in a safe and healthy manner. Once they have expressed these feelings they will be able to use the therapeutic games like the feelings jars, stress balls, play doh, putty, nd fidgets to learn coping skills they can use on a daily basis to decrease their anxiety and depression. In addition, my students work in a very small room when they are working with me so items like the chairs will increase their comfort when participating in activities. These resources will allow these students to express their trauma and learn healthy coping skills that will allow them succeed in the classroom.
My Project
Through the use of sand play, art therapy, fidgets, and therapeutic games my students can learn to express and cope with their grief and traumas. Many of my students lack the resources or social support to develop healthy and appropriate expression of their anger, grief, and anxiety.
By offering them a wide variety of mediums in which to express these feelings they develop safe coping skills that they can use throughout their life.
Young children struggle to express their feelings in verbal manners. Tools like sand and art give them an outlet to safely express what they are feeling. Through the use of the therapeutic games they can be taught the tools they will need to heal emotionally.
Emotionally healthy students are better equipped to learn and succeed in the classroom. These students will be better able to focus, use high level skills, and interact appropriately socially.
