Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

A typical day in my classroom is full of learning experiences. I don't provide my students with lessons; I provide them with learning experiences. By the end of the school year, I want all of my students to be full of the necessary information to make them successful in the real world.

I am a committed Baltimore City Public School teacher that is willing to work hard to be a great teacher, however, I cannot do it alone.

We are a Title I School that ninety-nine percent of my students are African American from many diverse backgrounds including including English Language Learners, military families to single families. These factors don't phase them. When you look at them you may see children who have already led a hard life, and children who have no hope of a positive future because of the neighborhoods that they come from. I would describe my school as a hidden gem. I think it provides a safe haven for children who are otherwise faced with tasks, responsibilities, and experiences that far exceed their years in maturity and experience. My school is the place where many of these children come for a meal, serenity, and more.

My Project

Getting excited about Tech happens only when it is in your own hands. My students a lot of time don't have experience and only do when they are in the mall playing on demo systems. I extend my classroom after hours for students so they may have a safe haven that serves as an incentive for students to complete homework and projects from all their middle school classes. The Nintendo and various games that are being requested in this project will be added to other resources that our students already have access to. My after-school center allows me to change my classroom and further transform it into a living room, so to speak. In this space, students will have numerous technological needs, computer access, a quiet place to do homework, projects, and now play games that may help them dive into a Tech Field job later on in life. I have asked for a variety of games which will allow for physical activity and allow sports play without the physical danger. The idea is that these students will not resort to making wrong choices or running hallways after school and hanging out in the streets of their rough neighborhood, and focus more on their education than they do on what is going on in the neighborhood.

The donations to this project will improve my classroom by improving the focus and environment that my students are exposed to, while also opening their minds to the future of Technology and where they could take it in the future.

My hope is that the students will focus more on their work, and be able to make school the priority that it needs to be in their lives. This will change my students lives for the better by allowing them to focus and be safe.
