I am a full-time K-5 special education teacher at a rural school. My school has approximately 200 students, and the number of students I teach varies from year to year. Currently I have 8 students in my classroom throughout the day that have learning disabilities and are behind their same age peers. These students benefit from small group or one-on-one instruction to learn. I provide instruction and support for students in all academic areas: math, reading, writing, spelling, science and social studies.
My goal is to provide support and instruction for my students to be successful in the general education classroom.
Many of the students that I teach are diagnosed with ADHD and need a different setting to gain focus on learning the curriculum. Students who come to me are behind their same-aged peers and need a learning environment that fosters independent work skills and encourages critical thinking.
My students love to learn and work individually with teachers and peers.
My Project
My students are in the elementary grades, but I like to begin talking about what they want to be when they grow up. During that unit we also talk about the amount of money they can earn if they continue with that career choice. Having the ability access apps that are the appropriate grade levels.
I would like to add an iPad in my classroom to add to station rotations, where they can learn about money, reading, and life experiences.
My students come from backgrounds where money can often be tight. There typically isn't much to spare, so opportunities to learn about saving, interest, account balances, and loans are not abundant. It is my job as their teacher, to not just prepare my students for academic-related content, but for life as well. An iPad will give my students access to technology that will enhance their learning.
I would like to add an iPad in my classroom to add to stations, where they can learn about money, reading, and life experiences.
With so many of my students reading below grade levels, having digital access to websites will afford them the opportunity to learn at their own pace while remaining part of a learning community.
Having access to technology in the classroom will empower my students to learn new skills that will impact them for years to come.
It would be much easier to teach my students the importance of economics if I had an iPad in my classroom.
