This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come from a major inner-city district and usually do not have many resources at hand, but are always wanting to learn more about the cultures of others. They come from challenging backgrounds and fight hard to overcome these challenges.
My students are always thankful for those helping with their education.
Being in an inner-city school has its challenges and outside help for their schooling is a great way to show my students that they are not forgotten and people want them to be successful in their lives.
My Project
Currently I teach American history in most of my classes. In the windows of my classroom, I hang the American flags of the era/president that we are currently learning about in class. As a new star is added onto the flag, I then hang the state flag of the corresponding new state. Right now, I have the 27 star American flag, and then the flag of Florida to represent the new star that was added.
Students can see the expansion of America through the addition of states through the addition of the stars on the American flag.
I have added the last few states that were added to the Union; Utah, Oklahoma, (New Mexico was available!), Arizona, Alaska, and Hawaii (including the Maoli flag).
I have also added two color ink cartridges for printing out work for students that might not want or are comfortable with only online assignments. Some students need a hard copy to complete their work. Also, it is good to be able to print out backup work at a moment's notice.
