Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Students come from all walks of life at our school. We celebrate diversity on a daily basis and look for ways to create a learning environment that appeals to all types of learners. We celebrate various learning styles and embrace the differences that make us all unique. This year our class includes multi-language learners, students with hearing impairments and students benefiting from various sensory integration strategies. We are nestled in a south side Chicago neighborhood, walking distance from a large university.

My Project

All children should benefit from classrooms that teach empathy and equity. MindSpark professional development opportunities seek to provide teachers with workshops that embrace creative problem solving through innovative lesson design. In a three day workshop titled “Equity-Centered Design Thinking and Innovative Mindsets" I will learn how to guard against teacher bias and create more equitable learning activities and environments for my students.

As a result of my training students will participate in lessons that promote risk-taking, identify innovation in failure, and celebrate creativity.

I anticipate a renewed mindset in myself, as well as in my students, that will lead to creative connections within experiences and relationships.
