Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My name is Ms. M., and I am a third-year teacher in Baltimore City. My 5th-grade classroom, which is in a small school located in Southwest Baltimore, thrives on student happiness and success. Each and every student who walks through our door brings his or her own set of inspirations and life experiences, and they inspire me every day to be the best I can be. About 86.3% of our students are on the free or reduced-price meal plan, and 25.2% are English Language Learners.
I wholeheartedly believe that every single one of my students has what it takes to be successful, and I am willing to try whatever it takes to get them where they need and WANT to be.
I love seeing our students, throughout the whole school, walk in with smiles on their faces, and I will try anything I can think of to ensure those smiles remain there. After all, school is all about learning and growing together.
My Project
I am always thinking ahead to the next school year around this time of the year. I reflect on things that went well, things that I want to change and materials I should probably start collecting for my new kiddos. Last year I was able to provide students with a lot of supplies thanks to the generosity of family, friends and even people I have never met (the kindness of strangers never ceases to amaze me)!
Reflecting on this year, it was the basics that I was able to provide for my students that made all the difference.
We use our notebooks on a daily basis as we are constantly reading and writing. Post-it notes are also vital to our classroom as we read a lot of really great novels but sadly can not just write all over them like I would love to do. These post-its allow us to take notes for enriching discussions.
I decided to add in a little flexible seating to my project as I believe this is also essential to classrooms in today's world. I have many students who have a harder time being successful just sitting in their chair or being still. I believe that the chair/desk bands will allow just the right amount of movement for some of my busier kiddos.
By providing my students with some of these tools I hope that our classroom environment and culture is just that much more positive. I want my students to know how much I care about them and for them to have all the opportunities that they deserve.
