"Once you learn to read, you will be forever free." ~Frederick Douglass
Every day, I welcome 60 first grade minds into my classroom who simply cannot wait to learn to read.
They know that reading unlocks a whole new world of freedom and adventure.
Located in Washington, DC, my students attend a Title I school where 99% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. When my students arrive to 1st grade, many of them are still getting comfortable with books and are reading below grade level. Despite this, I expect that all my students be reading on or above grade level by the end of the school year-and most importantly, my students and I are striving to build our love of reading together. Our school's vision is "a child-centered and diverse learning community that provides each student with the opportunity, resources and foundation to reach his or her full potential, achieve well-rounded citizenship and enjoy multicultural enrichment in a safe, supportive and challenging environment.” My students' constant love of learning fosters an environment of adventure, growth and support in my classroom.
As the school year approaches, I want to make sure my classroom is ready for my new students. My students are so eager to get back to school and I know that having a prepared classroom is the key to starting their year right! My students will use the headphones for Lexia time in centers. This is a center that they are able to start almost immediately and I know the colorful stools will be perfect for them to sit on!
One of the very first supplies my students will use will be a pencil-and thanks to you they will have brand new pencils!
In addition to the writing skills, we will use scissors and glue to build their cutting and pasting skills which they will use often throughout the school year in their literacy centers. During center time, each student will have their very own colorful folder to hold their classwork. They love decorating their folders and making them their own!
As the students master important routines and procedures, we will move on to more challenging and hands-on centers that I will make using the laminating sheets. This makes sure that the literacy activities can be reused for many school years to come! It also allows for the students to write on them using the expo markers provided in this project which the students absolutely love doing!
