My students are amazing young adults who inspire me to be better and push my own practice every single day. A group of teens made up of both East New York natives and transplants, my kids come from many very different experiences that they bring into the classroom and everything they do. Growing up in the city they have a unique way of seeing the world and approaching problems both within and outside of the classroom.
Even as ready as they are to continue learning and growing in high school, many of them have unique challenges in the classroom that often stem from lack of access to supplies.
Over 90% of our student population receives free or reduced-price lunches, and 99% of our students identify with a minority group. With all of the challenges they may face both in and out of our school, my kids work really hard to overcome to persevere. My sweet, curious, and loving kids deserve the world, and it is a privilege to be able to learn with them every day.
My Project
The materials I have requested are instrumental in the success of my students for this upcoming year. My students, while curious and ready to learn, often do not have access to even the most basic of school supplies. More than 80% of my kids come to school with no pencils or folders, let alone markers and glue.
My goal as an educator is not only to teach my students content, but to always make sure they feel safe, loved, and supported.
Having unrestricted access to basic resources makes my classroom a place where learning is not conditional. If a student needs a notebook, there is a no questions asked policy to make sure they get one. This project will help me start the year off right by helping my students get the supplies they need for their first semester of high school. The pens, pencils, notebook, and paper will go with the kiddos as they learn all day long! The markers, glue, and scissors will be used to make sure my classroom is always stocked and ready to go for big projects. All of the supplies will help the students get the education they deserve and be the best students they can!
